Admission Requirement – Food Science and Technology

Admission Requirements and Programme information:

UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES

UTME: To qualify for the 5 years BSc. Programme in Food Science and Technology, candidates require a minimum of five (5) Ordinary Level Credit passes in West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), General Certificate of Education (GCE) or National Examination Council Ordinary Level (NECO) in not more than two sittings. The credits must be obtained in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. The candidate must also meet the JAMB pass mark and include subjects- English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology/Agricultural Science.

Direct Entry: For the direct entry admission, candidates require at least an upper credit in OND/HND in Food Science and Technology, or related disciplines in combination with “O” Level results as stipulated by the Department. Qualified candidates will be admitted into 200 Level.

 

POSTGRADUATE STUDIES

Postgraduate diploma (PGD): candidates must possess one of the following;

  1. i. HND in Food Science and Technology or other disciplines of Science with at least an Upper Credit
  2. B.Sc. or B. Tech. in Food Science and Technology with a Third Class honours degree; or
  3. B.Sc. or B.Tech. in any related science discipline with at least a Second Class (Lower)  honours degree.

MSc. Degree Programme in Food Science and Technology

The candidate must possess one of the following

I.B.Sc. or B. Tech. Degree in Food Science and Technology or any related science discipline with a minimum of Second Class (Lower) honours.

II.PGD in Food Science and Technology at a minimum of Upper Credit

  1. Phil. Degree Programme in Food Science and Technology

Candidates who complete their postgraduate degree programme with a CGPA of less than 3.00 on a 5-point scale or the equivalent of 55% in the M.Sc. or M.Tech. degree in Food Science and Technology may be admitted into the M.Phil. programme. Such candidates shall be required to complete a minimum course work of eighteen (18) Units made up of nine (9) Units of relevant core courses and nine (9) Units of elective courses. On successful attainment of a minimum CGPA of 3.50 on a 5-point scale or 60% minimum at the end of the course work, such candidates shall be deemed to be qualified to transfer to the Ph.D. programme.

PhD. Degree Programme in Food Science and Technology

Normally, only candidates who hold the M.Sc. or M.Tech. Degree or equivalent qualification in Food Science and Technology may be admitted into the Ph.D. degree programme. Such candidates shall normally possess a minimum CGPA of 4.0 on a 5-point scale or 60% minimum.
