History of Animal Breeding And Physiology

Following the establishment of the College of Animal science and Animal Production, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, the Department of Animal Breeding and Physiology was established in 2008. Professor M.A. Oguike was appointed the first acting Head of Department during the 2007/2008 academic section. The second acting Head of Department, Professor E.N. Nwachukwu came on board on 6th June, 2011. Thereafter, the first substantive and current Head of Department, Professor Uma Kalu Oke was appointed on 25th May, 2015.
The Department is located in the College of Animal science and Animal Production, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike. It is charged with its core mandate in the area of Animal Breeding and Genetics, Animal Biotechnology, Animal Physiology, Reproductive Physiology and Artificial Insemination. The mission and objectives of the department has been to train, equip and empower students with good knowledge of science and practice of modern animal agriculture to boost animal production in the country. Other objectives have been to produce professionally competent graduates and post-graduate Animal Scientists who will be self-employed, employers of labor and educators who could work as consultants, at both National and International levels on issues concerning animal production; thereby actualizing the vision of the university for producing highly rated graduates in Animal science for the attainment of the primary goals of the National Agricultural Policy of self-sufficiency in food and animal production.
