HEC 111 Foundation of Home Economics 1Unit

Concept of Home Economics, Home Economics as related to other disciplines, History of Home Economics in Nigeria and worldwide, Career opportunities in Home Economics, Qualities of a good Home Economics teacher, Contributions of Nigerian home economists.

Home Economics all over the world, Home Economics and national development. Emerging issues of home economic: Globalization, gender issue, family and the law, family and adoptive practices etc. Relationship of home economist to the community.

HEC 121                    BASIC TECHNIQUES IN FOODS 1 UNIT

Concept of food and nutrition, Functions of food, adequate diet and balanced diet. Food and equipment in the food laboratory, Basic principles in food choice , selection and preparation , Identification and use of different cutleries, kitchen tools and equipment, Kitchen etiquette.

HEC 122                    Basic Clothing Techniques 2 Units

The concept and theory of clothing, selecting and arranging sewing centers, use and care of sewing tools and equipment such as sewing machines. Basic skills in sewing of different seams, stitches, attachment of zippers, belts, buttons, stiffening/interfacing, bands. Application of the skill in making table clothes, headrest, handkerchiefs, etc. Different stitches, seams, skills in pressing and pressing tools in clothing construction.

 

HEC 123Introductory Home Management                                                                 1 Unit Meaning, areas and importance of Home Management, Steps in Home Management, Motivations for Home management, values, needs, goals, standards; Skills in management of household equipment; Sanitation and Hygiene: care of family house, sanitary conditions, drainage and effective disposal of waste in the home. Introduction to the basic skills in pattern making, figure types, body measurement, the different patterns drafting methods (drafting basic blocks).Identification and transfer of pattern marks. Skills in laying and cutting of fabrics, making of simple garments.

Theories and concepts of using individual, family and community resources, Identification of existing resources; Characteristics’ of resources; Sustaining existing resources, management of resources at different stages of family life cycle. Concept of management. Different types of food and agricultural products, their structures and composition. Vegetables, fruits, cereals, palm wine, roots, and tubers, sugar cane, oil palm, meat, milk, chase, butter, sausage, ham; fish, orange, mango and other juices. The processing and storage of these food products, techniques and problems of developing, processing and merchandizing ingredient regulations, taste panels, market research, and patents, making of human food from local food stuff. Control of postharvest losses. Measurement of temperature, moisture and relative humidity of stored foods. Principles and practice of food storage.

HEC 221 – Introduction to Home Economics 2 units

Meaning of Home Economics, Philosophy of Home Economics, Objective of Home Economics, Areas of Home Economics and Relationship of Home Economics to Other Discipline. Historical Development of Home Economics Preparation for careers in a variety of occupations related to Home Economics, Meeting Basic Human needs with respect to food, clothing, shelter and Health. Good grooming.

HEC 222 – Personal, Family and Community Health 2 Units

Concept of health, family and community health. Health issues in families and communities. Accident in home and communities. Preventive measures of the health issues which include immunization and environmental sanitation. Communicable and non- communicable diseases; Family /Community adjustment to health crisis; Voluntary and governmental agencies efforts in preventing and solving health issues.

 

HEC 223- Marriage and family development                                  2 Units

Definition of terms, Reasons for marriage, Basic ingredients for a successful marriage, Characteristics of marriage, Process of mate selection, preparation for marriage; adjustment and interaction in marriage; Communication in marriage, laws and customs affecting marriage in different cultures with special emphasis on Nigeria; marriage and family institution, responsibilities in varying family systems and meeting challenging/crisis in family relationships caused by social change.

HEC 224 – Housing Design and Maintenance                                 2 units

 

Housing and housing supply and design, socio-economic factors and governmental policies that influence type, standard and availability of adequate housing/shelter in

 

Nigeria, at family, community and national levels. Principles and research basis for planning and arranging functional space for household activities to meet needs of various types of families and income levels over the life cycle, daily and weekly care of homes and housing.

HEC 225     Clothing Construction and finishing 1 Unit

The course will cover definition of clothing construction, adaptation of patterns to different apparel styles, use of commercial patterns, and construction of garments and finishing of garments.

HEC 412   Principles and Administration of Child Care Programme 2 Units

 

Principles, objectives and types of child care programme, decision or establishment of programme(s), getting prepared and organized, understanding children and their special needs, keeping children safe providing nutrition food, discipline and guidance, recognizing and handling child and neglect, working with parents.

HEC 413        Advanced Food Preparation and Preservation 2 Units

 

The application of principles of nutrition and management to planning and preparation of meals for special groups, and occasions; developmental research and control experiments with food; developing food demonstration techniques, quality characteristics of some important traditional Nigeria food ingredients, strategies for improving nutrient value and utilization of the traditional and non-traditional meals.

HEC 414        Child and Human Development Practicum                                             2

Units

Introduction to nursery school settings. Development of check-list for observation. Students will be practically involved in working with and relating to pre-school age children in Nursery schools and Day Care Centers, teaching the children. Observe the children’s development in the following areas: intellectual, social, moral, physical and emotional. The practicum will involve a day child observation in each week. A written report on the observation experience.

 

HEC 415        Advanced Home Management                          2 Units

 

Budgeting, planning for financial security, Wealth creation –Investment (Savings, stocks, shares etc.).Communication in the family. Personal human and social skill development, Human Rights and Violation. Social, political and economic policies affecting resource management. Home nursing practice, sexually education.

 

HEC 416        Advanced Clothing Construction 2 units

 

Advanced techniques in clothing construction in relation to elements of design and figure types, Lining, interlining, interfacing, cuffs collars, sleeves, embroidering etc. Construction of garments with special fabrics for ladies and men. Construction of special garments (wedding gowns, vulnerable groups etc).Contour garment.

 

400 Level       2nd Semester

 

HEC 421        Home Management Residence 2 Units

 

This course involves students spending a stipulated length of time in the home management residence. It affords students opportunity to apply all they have learnt in the home management course and other courses as they manage the resources of time, energy, money etc. in meeting the needs of the in-mates of the residence. Students are expected to demonstrate skills in meal management, house care entertaining, home, nursing, human relationship, interior decoration and other related home making activities in relation to income levels. There should be a practical examination at the end of the practicum.

 

HEC 422        Recipe Development and Sensory Evaluation         2 Units

 

Concept of recipe and sensory evaluation, Step in developing recipe ,Developing recipe using indigenous food resources, Fundamental principles of food quality evaluation and standard, taste , flavours, shapes size, texture, colour, and appearance (sensory evaluation) .Principle of recipe development, presentation acceptability, trials, selection of participants, analysis of results, emphasis on development and testing.

 

HEC 423 Food Service System and Administration 2 Units

 

Food service Operations. Menu planning and evaluation, forecasting, food and labour cost control .Catering in school, establishments (small and large), hospitals and other institutions, food distribution systems, quantity food production principles. Budgeting, purchasing convenience and sanitation. Supervision and management of personnel. Table laying.

HEC 424        Family Life Education/Family Planning 2 Units

 

Theories, concepts and principles of family communication, interaction, processes, decision making, conflict solution, integration and networking systems in the family and community. Inter relationships of these to the wider society. Emphasis on the function of the family as vital unit for the effective socialization and up-bringing of responsible and productive members of society, principles of responsible sex behavior, parenthood and family civic responsibilities, family policies.

HEC 425        Institutional Equipment, Food Production and Management                2

Units

The course involves skills, techniques, and principles in large scale food selection, preparation and service. It takes care of nutritional requirement of different groups in an

 

institution. It also deals with selection, use and care of institutional equipment and facilities. Field trip to various institutions where those institutional equipment are being used e.g. schools, hotels, hospitals etc. Report writing on the field trip.

HEC 426      Household Equipment and Management                                          2 Units

 

Definition of Household equipment, Type and kinds of household equipment (Traditional and modern).Principles of selecting household equipment, Management of household equipment, Simple household repairs and Maintenance.
